Dead Crow Decoy: Does It Work to Keep Crows Away?

A dead crow decoy is one of the most effective ways to keep crows away from your garden, yard, or crops.

This method works by using natural crow behavior—when crows see what appears to be a dead crow, they often avoid the area entirely.

Benefits of Using a Dead Crow Decoy

  • Defend Your Feeding Station

Help protect your deer feeder from unwanted, aggressive crows with a realistic visual deterrent.

  • Protect Your Pecans and Orchards

Discourage crows from landing, feeding, or returning to your pecan trees or orchard.

  • Stop Those Crows from Roosting

Stop crows from coming to roost on or around your house, shed or other buildings.

  • Keep Your Garden Crow‑Free

Help safeguard your freshly planted seeds or lush garden while keeping wildlife unharmed.

How it works

Crows are extremely alert and intelligent birds that quickly learn from other’s mistakes. By using this simple technique of the upside-down bleeding crow, it will be so disturbing to the crows that they will not return for fear of danger. At first use, the crows may gather around to view the bleeding crow and converse, but they soon will all agree that it is too dangerous to stay and then fly away.

The Best Scarecrow For Crows

Crows are incredibly intelligent birds with keen eyesight and strong communication skills, making them tricky pests for gardens, feeders, and crops. The DeadCoy™ Crow Effigy uses their intelligence against them: when crows see what appears to be a dead or injured crow, they sense danger and quickly call others to investigate, eventually deciding the area is unsafe and flying away.

To maximize effectiveness, position the effigy realistically—lying on the ground with disturbed grass or hanging upside down—and add small red markings to simulate wounds. Relocating the effigy periodically can help deter resident crows, while larger migratory flocks may require multiple decoys. Because crows operate in flocks, scaring just one often sends the entire group fleeing.

Reusable, durable, and easy to customize, crow effigies provide a cost-effective, chemical-free solution to protect your garden, feeder, or yard from these clever birds year after year.

How To Setup Your DeadCoy™

Directions

Lay the effigy belly-up on the ground or tie the string to the swivel and to a tree limb or suitable stake on the other end, allowing ample room for the decoy to turn about. Can be hung in three different positions. Belly-up is the most effective. Relocating the decoy periodically and/or adding more decoys will enhance the effect.

Helpful Hints

1. You can enhance the looks of the bleeding crow effigies by using a pair of scissors to trim between the feathers. Trim at different lengths and bend the feathers in different directions. You may even trim to the wing joint and bend it over to make it look like a broken wing.

2. Use two or three effigies in the same location but in various positions. The key to success is to outsmart the crows by making it look like these crows were trapped or shot while trying to eat the food.

3. Do not hang the crow too high from the food source.

4. For wildlife feeders you can position one on top of the feeder so it will be in full view. Consider placing others on the periphery where the food is dispensed. Please note that we have not seen any negative reaction from deer, as we have videoed deer coming to the effigies to check it out but go right back to eating.

5. Periodically changing the positions of the effigy will also confuse the crows.

6. Some crows are migratory, and these usually see the effigies and move on in their flight. Other crows are resident and may come back periodically to check the site over but over time they will quit returning because of the presence of continued danger.

7. Do not be alarmed if they call their friends and gather around and fly over the corpse. This is helpful to educate all of them at one time. Every flock of crows as a leader and when the leader says, “Let’s get out of here,” then they will all fly away together.

8. You can use an old fishing pole fastened to another object, like a tree or post, and tie the string to the end of the fishing pole and let the crow dangle just above the ground like it has been hung by a snare on the ground. In the wind, the fishing pole will also give the crow a little bounce like the crow is still dying.

DEADCOY™ In Action!

DeadCoy™ Frequently Asked Questions

The DeadCoy™ is a realistic dead crow decoy designed to act as a powerful crow deterrent. It mimics the appearance of an injured or dead crow, helping to scare crows away from gardens, yards, and outdoor spaces.

Crows are highly intelligent birds that recognize danger. When they see what appears to be a dead crow, they interpret it as a threat and often avoid the area entirely. This natural behavior makes a crow effigy one of the most effective bird deterrents for crows.

You can use this crow deterrent for gardens, yards, farms, fields, rooftops, and feeding areas. Place it anywhere crows gather, land, or feed for the best results.

For maximum effectiveness, place the decoy belly-up on the ground, which creates the strongest visual signal of danger. You can also hang it upside down or position it in different ways to make it appear more realistic and unpredictable.

Crows may initially approach to investigate, but once they recognize the perceived threat, they typically fly away and avoid returning. This makes it an effective long-term solution for keeping crows away.

Yes. This outdoor bird deterrent is made from durable plastic with a two-piece construction designed to withstand weather conditions in gardens, farms, and outdoor environments.

The decoy features a life-size crow body, approximately 16 inches long with a 22-inch wingspan, making it highly visible and realistic to birds.

For larger areas or heavy crow activity, using multiple decoys can improve results. Combining this with other bird deterrent methods can also increase effectiveness.

Crows are intelligent and may adapt over time. To maintain effectiveness, move or reposition the decoy occasionally so it continues to appear as a new threat.
